March 17, 2020 by Jeff Nicoll

Watch

Watch my youtube lecture about Paul Cézanne and the Impressionists.

Compare and contrast

In the lecture you will be asked to compare and contrast the works from the Salon and the works of Cézanne. Make a list that compares color, line, shape, texture, form, detail, value, mood and subject matter. The instructions are detailed in the video. At the end of the video write down the notes about Cézanne in your sketchbook.

Write a paragraph on which artist you think best exemplified the style of Paul Cezanne. Include an explanation citing evidence from the painting. Also give an example of why you didn’t choose the other artists’ work.

Impressionist still life

Gather a group of objects of your choosing (5 minimum). Try to not use forms that are too complicated, like spheres, cubes and cylinders (fruit is a good choice). Arrange the objects into a composition of your choosing. Think about the spacial relationships of the objects and how they will overlap. Draw the objects and color them; your pastels are a good choice for this but any media will work. As you work you should think about drawing and coloring like the impressionists and Cézanne. How should your draw it that is different from how you would normally choose to draw it? See the youtube video I made for a demonstration.

Reflection

Create a google doc and answer the following questions about your still life. Each question should be a minimum of one 5 sentence paragraph.

1. In what ways is your art similar to early impressionists like Paul Cézanne? How is it Different?

2. What parts of your artwork are successful, (what do you like best about it)?

3. What do you think you could improve about your project or do differently?
